Blind Transport

This product was developed in response to the need for visually impaired people to independently use public transport, specifically bus transport. It was undertaken as a group project, of which I held the role of team leader, as part of the Interactivation Design Lab in 2010. A working prototype was displayed at the Designing Sydney Exhibition in 2010.

The Blind Transport system operates over a Zigbee wireless mesh network, and relays information between a handheld device operated by the user, the buses and the bus stops. The primary function of the system is to give the user independence by informing them of when their bus is on its way, where it is, when it has arrived and when it has reached their stop to alight the bus. It also provides timetable information and locates surrounding services such as toilets and train stations.
